Storing Data Offsite Won’t Help If It Doesn’t Get There Safely

Implementing a foolproof disaster recovery plan includes more than making backups and sending them offsite. When considering the different steps of the process, a very important part is often ignored completely: transporting the media. It is imperative that each piece be labeled and tracked, so it can be retrieved later.

Getting the backup tapes from the data center to the offsite facility should use something sturdier than a cardboard box or paper sack. As tapes increase in density, so does the amount of data and the value of the information stored on them. Tape cartridges that are broken after being dropped or even crushed from stacking something heavy on top of them may or may not be recoverable. As a worst case scenario, small broken particles inside the cartridge could damage the tape reader device.

The primary job of a Turtle Case is to protect data and secure it during transport. Each Turtle Case is specially designed for transport and storage and to protect the contents from impact, debris, and environmental effects, including factors such as temperature and humidity.

One good place to look for storage solution recommendations is the manufacturers of the media. Turtle Cases are recommended by some of the leading tape and drive companies including Imation, IBM, and StorageTek. The Turtle Case Web site has links to white papers from IBM and Imation with recommended storage and handling procedures.
