EDP Land
Media Vault |
An offsite, computer data
tape storage and optical media storage, in controlled secure vault environment.
|
On-site backups are all but worthless in the event of disaster, physical disruptions or loss of access. The quicker the backup is transported off-site, the more usable - and accessible - it is likely to be when most needed. EDP Land offers the best insurance against data loss – Media Vault service – for secure, offsite protection and regular rotation of backup media. So when disaster strikes, we’re there around the clock to retrieve your data and deliver it to your hot-site location Offsite computer data tape storage
and media storage serves several purposes. It is a repository for data
backups prepared for operational recovery, archival retention and disaster
recovery. |

Operational backups
are created on a daily basis and are typically retained just for a few
days. The purpose of making operational backups is to have multiple,
recent, off-line copies of all important data to be used for individual
file restores. |

Archival Retention
backups areintended for long-term protection of data which may be required
at some time in the future for legal, regulatory, tax or business reasons.
E-mails sent and received, accounting data, personnel data, contracts,
customer orders, are all examples of data which may be archived to be
used in situations where corporate liability and culpability are concerned.
As backups, that are stored off site, are a time and date point of where
information was created, exchanged or even deleted, the backup tapes
stored off site become even more important if something is deleted either
by accident or design. In an increasing number of countries, regulatory
agencies require that certain data be archived and stored offsite. Companies
are also required to store regulated data for certain amounts of time.
Depending on the industry and the regulation, this time period could
stretch over 7-10 years. |
Disaster Recovery
backups are intended for recovery from a major, natural or human created
technical or environmental disaster. Cyber crime, sabotage, theft or
even something unspectacular, like the failure of the air conditioning
system, may lead to total loss of data and equipment. In much the same
way that you cannot plan for when you'll need an insurance policy, data
disasters tend to strike when you least expect. At a minimum, outages
to IT systems can cost millions in lost revenue, lost productivity,
and legal issues. At the extreme, a sustained outage can threaten the
viability of an organization. According to the Gartner Group, “two
out of every five enterprises that experience a disaster go out of business
within five years.” (Gartner, Disaster Recovery Plans and Systems
are Essential, Robert Witty, Donna Scott, September 2001) |

Many companies mishandle magnetic
media during the shipping process. Magnetic data tapes are susceptible
to errors under abuse. This can lead to compromised data integrity if
stored records ever need to be retrieved. It’s important to handle
and store magnetic tape cartridges properly to ensure that data is available
if a disaster ever strikes or an audit ever occurs. |
As a precaution, EDP Land
uses special transport cases developed for transportation of magnetic
and optical media. It is vital to keep tape cartridges away from stray
magnetic fields because even small magnetic sources can compromise data
stored on the tape. A tape’s magnetic fields, and thus its content,
can be corrupted by something as innocent as an industrial floor cleaner.
Still, in some small companies, off-site storage means, the “IT
guy” takes the backup tapes home, although even a short travel
on the underground or tram may render a backup tape useless. Most manufacturers
recommend storing tape cartridges at a temperature between 15 degrees
Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, and between 40 percent and 60 percent
humidity. |

EDP Land takes
all necessary steps to safeguard data integrity by minimizing the chances
of damaged tape cartridges during transportation and long periods of
storage. |
EDP Land Tape transport, data security All EDP Land media transport cases carry a barcode label with a hologram identifying the client, the transport case and the backup set in the case. To start with, each client purchases at least two media transport cases and some seals. When media containing backups is ready to be sent to the off-site |

storage, the
client places it in the transport case and seals the case. Seals carry
a unique ID number. EDP Land handles only cases closed and sealed by
the client. Transport cases may be sent and received by authorized client
staff only. Clients must inform EDP Land whenever there is a change
in authorized personnel. The person authorized must provide proof of
identification. Rotation Scheduling |
Offsite rotations
are available with daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly options. EDP Land
customizes its tape pickup, delivery, and rotation schedules to your
business. We provide fast, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week emergency delivery
of your backup data also to your Hot Site.
The offsite storage is located in an unidentified building. The facility is designed to function on a 24 hour, 7 day a week schedule without drawing public attention. Our facilities and secure ordering process ensure that not only are tapes delivered on time, but only the correct and authorized personnel can order these items. In summary, properly transporting and storing magnetic data cartridges offsite is an important step in the backup and disaster recovery process. It’s also crucial for compliance with government storage regulations. There is no more need to assume the risks of in-house backup data protection.
