According to, Adrian Wheal, Director of Learning and Information Services at the University of Lincoln in England, the starting point was a situation typical of any educational institution. The amount of waste and abuse was enormous because printing and copying were neither tracked nor charged. No one had any idea how to account for costs. Utilization of capacity was unbalanced, and there were often long waits at the printers.
A flexible and economic solution
An assessment of the requirements of the University of Lincoln found that

and the ability to choose where the individual work will be printed have ended
many at-the-printer frustrations. Scan-to-mail, a process where you can scan
a document and send it straight to your e-mail, was a huge success among students
and faculty alike.
